Ever wonder what separates the genuine success stories from the empty hype in your feed?
Welcome back to "Trash or Treasure" - where Gail and Candice dig through the noise to find the real gems worth your attention.
This week, we struck gold with a post that had us both saying "TREASURE!" from the get-go. But what made this one so different from the usual "I made 6 figures in my sleep" nonsense?
In this episode, we dive into:
๐ Why context is everything - The power of sharing your actual timeline (spoiler: it took 7 years!)
๐ The beauty of admitting failure - How "it flopped... again... and again" became the foundation for real success
๐ Why knowing your destination matters more than you think
๐ Launch, rinse, repeat - The unglamorous truth about doing the work over and over until it clicks
๐ Finding flowers on the mountain - Why you need to celebrate the messy middle, not just the summit
This is what authentic entrepreneurship looks like, folks - no overnight success stories, no magic bullets, just honest grit and the willingness to keep going when things don't work out as planned.

SPEAKER 1 - Candice: [00:00.3]
Welcome to the Grit Reapers, the NoBS podcast for online entrepreneurs.
SPEAKER 2 - Gail: [00:04.8]
I'm Gail.
SPEAKER 1 - Candice: [00:05.6]
And I'm Candice. And we're here to cut through the crap and give you the real truth about what it really takes to be successful online.
SPEAKER 2 - Gail: [00:12.8]
Let's get down to business.
SPEAKER 1 - Candice: [00:15.9]
Hello and welcome back to another episode of the Grit Reapers. Today we are playing Trash or Treasure. If you have listened to a previous episode like this, what we do is we scroll our feeds and often Gail and I will like, screenshot something and send it to each other and be like, oh, please.
SPEAKER 1 - Candice: [00:36.3]
I mean, really. And then other times we like, how amazing is this? So Gail is going to read or just kind of explain the post we saw and then we are going to vote on whether it is Trash or Treasure and talk about it a bit.
SPEAKER 2 - Gail: [00:52.3]
Perfect. Thanks. Cands. Okay, so this was actually a post in a common, a business group that we are together in. In common. And it was basically this lady celebrating the fact that she had been asked to be published in a media publication that has a reach of well over 350 million million monthly readers right now.
SPEAKER 2 - Gail: [01:18.9]
In the online world, we are, quite used to these kinds of posts. And so often, you know, that's kind of the only context that you get. But this was a great post because as we read down, you know, she told us a little bit more about what she's been doing.
SPEAKER 2 - Gail: [01:38.4]
And then what she said was, and I'm going to read from here, guys. I literally thought I was sitting down to write a blog. Seven years ago, I didn't even know how to get one single person to my website. I did the Mount Everest exercise.
SPEAKER 2 - Gail: [01:55.7]
Okay, so she's talking about within the business by design program. She did the Mount Everest exercise. And she said, this is the most important in my honest opinion, because if you don't know where you're going, then how will you know when you get there? I did the 30 day mind your money training.
SPEAKER 2 - Gail: [02:12.6]
I mastered the influence framework by doing it over and over and over and over. I monetized before I made it. I ran a live launch over and over. I ran a challenge launch 2.0 over and over.
SPEAKER 2 - Gail: [02:29.3]
I joined a mastermind, and more than one of my launches have flopped more than one time. Okay. Then she goes on to say, you know, what she's doing and why she's kind of doing it, sort of her why. And then she's like, if you're reading this, you're absolutely in the best of hands.
SPEAKER 2 - Gail: [02:48.9]
So she's talking about, her mentor, James Wegmore. Follow the steps. Let yourself fail, let yourself fail again, and then again celebrate the messy middle with one day you'll look back at it and laugh because you didn't know what was about to come around the corner.
SPEAKER 2 - Gail: [03:06.8]
Those are the best kinds of laugh. And did you know there are flowers all the way up a mountain? Okay, so now we get to vote. Was that trash or was that treasure?
SPEAKER 1 - Candice: [03:24.0]
Yeah, treasure. Absolutely. So what a great post.
SPEAKER 2 - Gail: [03:29.9]
Amazing post. So what did you love about that post?
SPEAKER 1 - Candice: [03:32.7]
Okay, so the first thing was, it took me seven years, you know, and I just. I really think what you said at the beginning is so right. It's like, you read these posts like, hey, I just had 100k launch, full stop. Yeah, like, you know, there's no context around.
SPEAKER 1 - Candice: [03:51.4]
Oh, but by the way, I've been doing this for 10 years, so I, love that she contextualized by giving us, like, a bit of a time frame. Like, it's taken a long time to get here. And then I love. I love that she was just able to say, it flopped, it failed, it failed again.
SPEAKER 1 - Candice: [04:11.0]
And then it failed again. And that she just kept repeating, you know, that she ran it and then she ran it over and over and over again. And I'm sure along the way, I mean, this is my inference, that she learned something every time she did it, so that when she ran it again, she incorporated whatever she had learned, because clearly she's gotten to where she wants to go now, you know?
SPEAKER 2 - Gail: [04:37.3]
Absolutely.
SPEAKER 1 - Candice: [04:38.3]
So for me, those are the two big takeaways. Number one, it's that there was no bullshit about, like, hey, this is my first ever launch, and I made 50. I mean, we, we laughing, but I see stuff like that all the time, and in my head I'm like, oh, people, please, that.
SPEAKER 1 - Candice: [04:55.2]
That was not your first. And if it was your first launch, you already had, like, an audience. You just weren't monetizing your audience. You know, there's always context behind those, apparent overnight blow your mind figures.
SPEAKER 1 - Candice: [05:11.0]
You know, it's never really like that. So I love that she was honest and that she wasn't scared to admit, like, no, I didn't get it right, like, straight away. And, and again, like, just the name of our podcast is the Grit Reapers. She clearly has this in leaps and bounds because she just didn't give up.
SPEAKER 1 - Candice: [05:30.1]
She just kept going.
SPEAKER 2 - Gail: [05:31.8]
Absolutely. And the other thing that I loved is the Mount Everest exercise, because, you know, they do say that if you don't re. You know, if you don't know where you're going, then how do you know where you're going? Kind of thing.
SPEAKER 1 - Candice: [05:45.0]
Yeah.
SPEAKER 2 - Gail: [05:45.4]
So that's one thing that I am not very good at. I'm not very good at, you know, knowing exactly where I want to go. And I think maybe that's partly because even after five years, I don't quite know yet what I want to do with my business. You know, like, when I grow up, what will I be?
SPEAKER 2 - Gail: [06:03.2]
So I think I'm getting clearer. But, yeah, so I think I need to do that Mount Everest exercise again. The other thing that I've heard a couple of times, and, you know, I. I haven't listened to all of James's podcast, but people, have been saying, you know, I have committed to launch 20 times this year.
SPEAKER 2 - Gail: [06:24.3]
20 times. I was like, I'm gonna launch. And I haven't even done it. Like, I'm gonna launch four times, once a quarter, 20 times. And I see it, I see it with a couple of people that, you know whose circle I'm in. They launch and they launch and they launch and they launch the same thing.
SPEAKER 2 - Gail: [06:42.6]
And each time I think you get better and better and better at it, and you get more data and you get more feedback. So that was the other thing that really stuck out to me. And as you said, you know, she launched, she launched, she launched.
SPEAKER 2 - Gail: [06:58.6]
And that's kind of where I'm heading towards because I feel like I've done enough kind of bouncing around, and I kind of know what I need to be doing. And the other thing I just loved was when she said, did you know there are flowers all the way up a mountain? Because, you know, you get to work with people who are just amazing, and you just get to help them.
SPEAKER 2 - Gail: [07:21.7]
And so there are beautiful moments the whole way up the mountain, and we have to remember that, yes, you've got a goal to get to the top of the mountain, but you have to enjoy yourself along the way. Like, it can't get to the stage where you just, like, slogging up this hill and never stopping to smell the flowers or look at the view.
SPEAKER 1 - Candice: [07:43.6]
Yeah, exactly. It reminds me of Jane Edmonds episode with us. You know, how a yoga teacher built her online empire? Because she said something very similar, which was like, she had set this goal and got there, but already set the next goal and didn't, like, take a moment to actually be like, oh, my word, I actually accomplished what I, said I was going to.
SPEAKER 1 - Candice: [08:08.5]
She also had a post in that group where we were like, this is an amazing post.
SPEAKER 2 - Gail: [08:12.5]
Yeah, that's right.
SPEAKER 1 - Candice: [08:14.0]
And I think the, the kind of tone of, her episode was also this, like, just enjoy along the way, you know, like, it doesn't always have to be the final destination that you and. And I mean, all of us know. And I feel like, it's like runners, you know, like runners will be like, no, I just want to run a 10K.
SPEAKER 1 - Candice: [08:32.7]
And then they run their 10K and they're like, okay, no, I think I'm just going to run a 15K. You know, business owners are the same. It's like, no, I just want my first 5k month. And then you get that and then you already setting your next goal rather than actually like just, wow, give yourself a little pat on the back that you did it, you know.
SPEAKER 2 - Gail: [08:50.8]
Absolutely.
SPEAKER 1 - Candice: [08:52.0]
What a great post. Yeah, what a, what a great post. Pure treasure.
SPEAKER 2 - Gail: [08:56.0]
What a great post. And in fact, Cands, we've, we've reached out to her, haven't we, to see if we have. Indeed. So if she says yes, we will let you all know and she will be in our podcast.
SPEAKER 1 - Candice: [09:09.5]
And, yeah, guys, just keep looking for the treasure, because as much as there's trash out there, like, you do find gems with people sharing just openly and honestly and who really do just want to help you succeed, you know? So in our opinion, this was a.
SPEAKER 1 - Candice: [09:24.8]
This was a piece of treasure. Definitely. Awesome stuff. All right, we'll catch you next time, guys. Bye. Bye.
